Birstall Village CC V Huncote II CC (2 points) - Birstall win by 9 Wickets
Weather Report : With worries over the start of the season being delayed due to the poor weather we recieved over the winter we were lucky that a week of fine whether dried out the pitch enough for play. Sunny all day but getting colder as the day went on.
Only 10 men for Tim Kirby's first game in charge and a debut for up and comming superstar Frazer Hubbard. With many players out with other commitments DK took over as wicket keeper.
The toss was won by Birstall and they put Huncote into bat.
Jamie Smith & Max Swords opened the batting on what looked like a hard batting track very slow with some uneven bounce. The game started badly for the Huncote boys with Jamie going second ball edging a wide ball to gully. Al Sommer went in and soon hit a trade mark four off his legs. Meanwhile Max was starting slowly working the ones and twos but the pain of his long standing knee injury was showing. It wasn't long before Al missed a straight one and was bowled. Tim Kirby was next in and started well getting off the mark with a hard hit four straight down the ground. The skipper and Max were putting on a good partnership when it all went wrong. Off went the openers and on came the spinners, TK never looked secure against the slower bowlers and it wasn't long before he mis-cued a full toss straight to mid off getting caught for 11.
Stan Sexton then joined Max at the crease and with his usual grit and determination started to build an innings. By now max was well into his stride and sent two fours to the leg side boundary before dispatching a big six over deep mid wickets head. A few overs with the score on 75 Max reached his 50 with a big cheer from the balcony. The cheering wasn't to last too long as Max was stumped for 51 and the Huncote innings was looking like being over soon. Larry Baxter went to join Stan and the two old boys were going on too slow when Larry tried a big hit over the top but got caught at mid on for a couple of runs.
The big hitter PK was next up and he was working the ones and twos well finding the gaps and even managing to get Stan running, before Stan hit one straight to cover and called a run. PK was backing up and was out by a mile any hopes of a reasonable score had died. Somner trudged out and didn't worry the scorers much with the second duck of the game. DK also looked to work the singles around but didn't get very far before getting caught out.
This left Frazer to wander to the crease looking nervous and with the score on 98 Huncote were looking for a couple more runs for another point. Stan managed to get these and left the 13 year old five balls to face to defend us not getting all out. In the Hubbard way he played four magnificent forward defences ones his dad would have been proud of and one leave to save Huncote getting all out. The innings closed on 100 for 8.
With such a low target to chase Birstall sent in some quick players to knock off the runs. Not much to report here they got the runs in 23.4 overs with the bowling shared around. the only bowler of any note Al Sommer who took the only wicket.
In summary a bad start to the season one which can only get better this week against Cosby at home.
Team news:
With Mitchell Hubbard, Paul Knibbs, Eddie Stratford, Geoff Farmer, J W Smith & James Brewin all back in contention from various exploits last week a tough selection policy is expected.
