Huncote II CC V Birstall Village CC - Match Drawn
Huncote seconds came into this game on the back of a very good win the week before. TK, PK, Somner, Crossley and Frank were all added to the team, which made for a very strong line up. On a wet day Huncote lost the toss and were put into bat. Ian and Frank opened the batting and got the team off to a good start over after over they batted with Ian hitting the ball freely all over the park and Frank defending and picking up the singles. Ian soon had his half century and Huncote were looking in a very commanding position. Then with the score on 142 the rain came and by the time it had finished both sides had lost 3 overs from their innings.
Frank was next to reach his 50 a hard working 50 which some spectators after commented "It was like watching paint dry!!" (One DK in particular was disgusted with the run rate). Ian was well on his way to a magical three figures when on 96 he charged down the track and missed the ball the stumper proceeded to take the ball from in front of the stumps which should result in a no ball but Jamie missed this. Out with the score on 162 a very good opening stand, Brewin was sent in to try and get the rate going and hit a couple of boundaries before he was bowled for 12 in the last over. TK came in with 4 balls to spare and added two from two balls with Frank adding one run to take his score to 64 not out at the close of the innings.
Tea was taken and out came the Huncote boys pumped up and looking for a second win on the bounce. TK opened the bowling and 6 runs were hit off of the first 3 balls before the rain came again and the players left the field of play. The ruling stated 20 overs to be taken from 6.45pm which might give Birstall less then their allocated 40 overs. The rain soon stopped and TK finished his over and JW came on up the hill, the next few overs passed without much significance not many runs no wickets and a dusky sky. JW was replaced by Eddie after 6 overs and two later by TK and Stan was on.
It wasn't long when Eddie took his first wicket a fine caught and bowled diving to his right, Birstall then sent in the big hitters but this batsman didn't last long when Eddie got him stumped. The next two batsman put on a steady stand and Eddie was replaced by Somner up the hill, some looked on this move as interesting but it proved an inspiration. Stan got in on the act with another caught and bowled. It was left to the final 7 or so overs Birstall needed 8 an over Huncote needed 7 wickets, Birstall never kept up with the rate and some fine bowling from Twiggy left him with four clean bowled victims. Two of which came off the final two balls of the game.
In conclusion a good game of cricket some good fielding by 21 players the odd one out being PK who was a disaster and must have cost at least ten runs during the game including throwing one over the boundary. Ian Crossley was later named MOM for his fine batting and Frank was slatted all day Sunday down the county maybe he will never be seen again!! (We can only hope as players falling asleep while watching is becoming a real problem).
