Huncote 1st V Leicester Caribbean 1st 30/08/03 - Huncote gain a losing draw

A spirited rearguard from the Huncote batsman was not enough to gain a win against the Caribean. In the end the game was played out in near darkness, with Brian Driver and Paul Knibbs solid in defence to keep the visitors within reach of Newbold. Haroon Khawaja's brilliant half century was not enough to claw back the runs that Barthley had gained the top of the league side.

Barthley's 96 not out, was well supported by Galloway, but the other batsmen offered less resistance. Still a total of 199-6 looked big on a damp wicket. For Huncote Wayne Smith had bowled tightley, but others struggled against the decent batting of the big Caribean number 4. Adrian Smith picked up 3 wickets changing his pace well, but struggled with his front foot no-balls.

Huncote choose to fight fire with fire and in went Brewin first up. His cavalier 22, and Crossley's well crafted 25, started the innings well, but Khan fought back also picking up Lill, and Pete Kirby. Tim Kirby and Haroon Khawaja then batted brilliantly as the light faded. Their 85 run partnership brought Huncote a slim chance, but any new batsman would struggle to pick up the ball in very dark conditions. The highlight of the partnership was the way Kirby and Khawaja took to the bowling, hitting 3 sixes, Kirby's huge pull off of Barthley's bowling brought the crowd to life.

In the end Huncote had to play out the draw, but a great game, slightly spoiled by the lack of a league Umpire, very poor for such a crucial match. Khawaja gaining the MOM for a well paced knock, his 61 off of 81 balls.
