Charlton Wheelies V Northampton Cavaliers 25/09/03 - Wheelies Win by 79 Runs

In a match where Cavalier Skipper, Brian Driver, was a little experimental, the side from Northampton put up a good fight against a talented Charlton set up. The Wheelies appeared to take the match very seriously, and set out to win at all costs, but soon they sunk down to the oppositions level and finally just had a laugh. Once again the Cavalier's were forced into the field, losing the toss for the third time, and a steady start for the Wheelies set up a good base. Driver and Swann opened, bowling tightly, but Green looked impressive on his way to 70 runs.

Driver picked up the wicket of Time, and Taylor was run out by the skipper for 26. Then came a dazzling spell of bowling from M. T. Merciless himself, Mark Scrimshire, who picked up 4-40. Dyer kept the innings going with some nice shots and the Wheelies posted a good score of 224-9. Craig Webb had his maiden bowl, even picking up a wicket, Kitchener was very tidy, and Smith got out the high scoring Green. Haywood, Jason Scrimshire, and Ian Crossley also had a bowl, the later claiming a wicket, LBW.

The total looked challenging, and when Kitchener fell for 6, Marriot for a duck, and Crossley for 7, things looked bleak. It was left to the middle order to steady the ship, and this happened in the form of Wayne Smith and James Swann. Smith departed though for a good looking 13, very disappointed to top edge a full toss down leg side, and Leroy Scrimshire didn't hang around for long. Swann found an able partner in Craig Webb as the two set about building an innings. With Sylvestor and Bosbott, the Wheelies had a very good opening attack, but the other bowlers were unable to create the same pressure. Webb and Swann built a very good partnership of 65, before Webb was caught for 34. Swann soon followed for 37 and the game was up. Both innings were full of quality with both players picking up their highest score in senior cricket.

Andy Haywood and Jason Scrimshire should some resistance, but it was left to the old pro's Brian Driver, and Mark Scrimshire, to bat out the last 9 overs, and bore the crowd and the opposition. In doing this Driver also won the guess the score sweepstake, splitting the money with his partner, although he lost out to Smith in the total runs competition. In the end he finished 4 Euros down. Serves him right. A good game, played in good spirit, with Swann perhaps performing the best for the Cavaliers.
