Collingtree Crusaders V Huncote Spearheads 04/05/2003 - Crusaders Win By 32 Runs

Huncote travelled to Collingtree full of cheer as the sun was shining and things looked good for a full game of cricket. PK though soon dampened the spirits by losing the toss and being asked to field by the opposition captain. Twiggy and Swanny opened the bowling and although no early in roads were made they kept things quite tight. Swanny was then replaced by Ben and Twiggy by TK and the scoring rate picked up with the left handed opener finding his feet and hitting the ball with great power to the fence. Ben was replaced for one over by Matt and Brewin persisted in missing two stumpings in consecutive balls. Silk was now on and TK had swapped ends and it wasn’t too long before the first wicket fell as TK bowled the tall right handed opener. The scoreboard by this stage was rattling along and with the other opener in fine form this continued. Eventually after further spells by Twiggy and Swanny and a few more wickets Huncote were set a total of 216 to win. All you can say was that is was a very rusty bowling and fielding performance.

Tea was taken and in a surprise move PK opened with Brewin. Brewing following on from his 40 the day before got things off to a great start and the ball was dispatched all over the field with immense power including 1 flat six behind square where I am sure all the fielders were glad they weren’t standing. PK was first to fall nicking one behind for 19, TK came to the crease for his first innings of the season and was soon gifted a full toss which he sent flying to the boundary. Brewin by this stage had passed his fifty and was merrily swinging at everything but he attempted this once too often and was bowled. The experienced Al Sommer entered the game and a couple of overs later he called for a crazy single and TK was just run out, maybe Swanny was pressured by the loud appeal but he did admit afterwards it was close but he thought TK had walked those who know him will know this is rarely the case.

Well Al didn’t last much longer and it was down to Jamie yes Jamie Smith to keep the run rate up. His big hitting, yes you read right big hitting and Twiggy’s pace between the wickets saw the possibility of a Huncote win continue. Twiggy was then stumped and enter the form man Silk, he and Jamie kept things going but as with Brewin earlier Jamie went for one too many big shot and was bowled for an impressive 42, Matt promoted up the order for some big hitting didn’t last long and it was down to Silk and Swanny to try and get the remaining 40 or so runs for a Huncote win. Unfortunately Silk trying to hit boundaries managed to pick the man at long on and all hopes of a win were abandoned. Swanny and Ben lasted a bit longer before Swanny skied an attempted pull shot. Huncote lose but put up a spirited batting display chasing a big target.

After the game there was talk of being invited back for the presidents game and this looks a very likely occurrence as the offer of a free BBQ might be too great for some players. The first defeat of the season but everyone got a game and spirits were still high during the after match curry.
