Electricity Sports Sabretooths V Huncote Spearheads 29/06/03 - Huncote Win by 8 Wickets

On a very hot day Huncote were forced to field as the Sabretooths needed to prepare the tea during their innings. T Kirby opened the bowling with Swann and kept things very tight without managing to grab any wickets. The first wicket fell as debutante Tony Chamberlain picked the ball up in the covers and ran out the opener, Blick. T Kirby took a break and was replaced by Danny Wilson also on debut. Danny struggled with wides but did manage to get the opposition captain, John Vann, well caught in the point region by Ian Crossley. Then Danny struck again as Perry chipped the ball high in the air, round ran 10 year old George Crossley and took a great catch by his chest.

This was to be the start of a good performance in the field by the youngster. Tony came into the attack for Swanny and looked very lively beating the bat a few times. Danny came off after managing to bowl a succession of wides but more importantly he picked up 2 wickets. Carl Sommer replaced him and was a little expensive with his 4 overs and was replaced by Ian Crossley. This bought about George Crossley’s next bit of magic. Ian bowled one that was smashed back at him above his head which he only managed to parry to the on coming George, who picked up the ball and throw down the stumps running out Dilwarli by a couple of yards. Great skills by the youngster, who looks a real prospect for the future. Tony then picked up his wicket as he yorked Abdul's off stump, the scoring rate was very slow and Tony produced a good spell of 8 overs 1 maiden 1 for 20 runs. Ben Crossley replaced him and bowled 4 good overs unfortunately not picking up a wicket.

With lots of wickets down and not too many on the board George Crossley entered the attack and with his first ball bowled the young Sabertooth, Mohammed. For the remaining 4 overs Frazer Hubbard had a bowl and picked up a wicket and Swann finished his impressive 8 overs by bowling 2 more gaining replica figures to Tony. Electricity Sports finished on 154/9 with 9 Huncote players bowling.

A good tea was taken if not slightly expensive but the chicken nuggets went down well. Danny Wilson and Ian Crossley opened the batting and Ian was out first ball of the innings as he chased a wide one and nicked it behind. Tim Kirby came to the crease and started to put the ball in the gaps and with some good running managed to get the scoring going. Danny looked a little nervous at first but very solid and showed signs of a good future hopefully in the white of Huncote one day. These two saw off the opening bowlers, Abdul and Dilwarli, before Kirby tucked into the spin alternative smashing one six over mid on and a few fours.

Danny was eventually well caught in close for 13, a hard working innings but he offered good support and ran well between the wickets. Tony joined Kirby at the crease and it wasn’t long before Kirby bought up his 50 with a push into the off side. It was now time for the run rate to increase as Kirby went on the attack finding boundaries with relative ease. Tony was settling in well and hit a glorious straight drive for four possibly shot of the day. With the winning total approaching and Kirby nearing his 100 he started to take a few more risks, a 6 over square leg was followed by a 4 cut through the off side.

So victory came into the 30th over, Kirby on strike first ball 2 runs. Kirby onto 97, second ball four straight back over the bowlers head and there is was his second hundred of the season. Next ball big six over a wide long on then 2 quick singles and Huncote had a convincing victory. Tony Chamberlain hitting the winning run and capping off a good debut 20 not out.

Huncote win by 8 wickets with over 10 overs to spare. George Crossley had a blinder in the field and two good debuts by Wilson and Chamberlain. The Spearheads with an average age of 18 managed to beat the Sabretooths and get back into winning ways after last weeks disappointing result.

MOM Tim Kirby for his second hundred of the season finished 108 not out.
