Hathern Old 1st V Huncote 1st 09/06/03 - Huncote Win by 6 Wickets

On a nice summer’s day Hathern won the toss and elected to bat. Wayne Smith was back in the side and looking for his first wickets of the season and the rest of the team was pretty much as you were. Tim Kirby took the new ball and with his second ball he had the left handed Leeson caught behind by Frank Hubbard. Wayne Smith opened from the other end and had Godwin in all sorts of problems with one shot just clearing Ross Spencer in the gully and Brian Driver dropping him at second slip. Smith was first to take a break after a good 6 or 7 over spell and Knibbs came on to replace him. Hathern were progressing slowly but keeping wickets in hand, Pete Kirby then became the second Huncote player to drop a catch as he back peddled but not quick enough as the ball just clipped his finger tips on the way down.

Smith came on to replace T Kirby and started bowling with real pace and venom and with the wind behind him he got his first wicket. Godwin tried to pull a shortish delivery but only managed to top edge it down the Knibbs at fine leg. The wickets then started tumbling as quick as the catches started going down. Hathern were reduced to 67 – 7 with Wayne Smith grabbing 5 excellent wickets. Tim Kirby replaced Smith, and Knibbs by Carl Sommer, the catches kept going down with but eventually Hathern were all out for 128 in 38 overs.

Huncote were forced to bat for 7 overs before tea, a crazy decision but none the less Crossley looked in sparkling form as he smashed that ball to all parts. At 30 odd for 0 at tea things were looking promising for Huncote. A good tea was taken and it was back to the action. Crossley continued his good form and got to 30 before he got a ball that kept low and was adjudged LBW, another harsh decision for the skip but I for one feel he has to take these bad ones in his stride.

Driver joined Frank Hubbard and Hubbard was the next to go, trying to play a cut shot he managed to chop it into the keepers pads then up into slips hands. A very unfortunate dismissal for Hubbard but at least he managed double figures and a glorious 4 over mid off. Ross Spencer joined Driver and took no time to start dispatching the ball to the boundary hitting 4’s and 6’s as he powered his was along.

These two put on 30 odd with Driver adding just 1 before getting caught behind trying to cut the ball. A poor shot by the vice skip who is not having the best of times at the moment. Pete Kirby came in and it wasn’t long before Ross Spencer was celebrating his first 50 of the season, then a few overs later Kirby hit the winnings runs as he flicked the ball in trademark style off his legs for 4 runs.

Huncote win by 6 wickets, and display a good bowling and batting performance. The fielding needs some work as this could cost us in some of the bigger games. But 24 points is 24 points and bring on bottom of the table Taveners tomorrow.
