Huncote Spearheads V Laughton and Mowsley Lawnmowers 06/07/03 - Laughton Win by 45 Runs

After some early afternoon pitch preparation by the Kirby’s, Wilson and B Crossley a pitch was ready to play on. Peter Kirby lost the toss yet again and Huncote were asked to bowl. Adie Smith making his first appearance of the season opened the bowling and even coming back from injury he managed to generate some good pace. J W Smith opened from the bottom end and was swinging the ball a long way and bowling with good accuracy. J W was first to strike forcing an edge that was well taken by Frazer Hubbard behind the stumps. J W bowled very well and ended his spell with good figures of 8 overs 1 wicket 10 runs conceded.

The second wicket partnership was a good one for the lawnmowers and set them up for a big score on an unpredictable surface. Eventually Swann ran out the other opener brilliantly and Sommer had the number 3 well caught by A Smith at square leg. Other notable performances in the field came from Swann again who got his second run out of the game, Jamie Smith bowling well at the death and T Kirby who off spun his way to figures of 4 overs 2 for 13 with 2 dropped catches. The Lawnmowers finished on 159 from their 40 overs.

As usual a nice Huncote tea was taken, Brewin and Wilson were given the task of opening the batting. Disaster struck in the first over though as second ball Brewin skied one up in the air and was caught at point. Adie came in and smashed a quick 20 before being caught at mid off. Chamberlin managed 10, T Kirby a quick fire 18 and P Kirby 2. A victory was looking a very long shot and so it proved as Sommer and Hubbard batted out most of the remaining overs before Frazer got caught off the penultimate ball and for some reason the last ball was never taken. Huncote closed on 114/9d to lose another game this season.

Next week sees Huncote travel back to Collingtree to take on the Crusaders in their president’s game. A better performance will be needed if Huncote are to produce a better result and with P Kirby away T Kirby will be taking the reigns.

MOM J W Smith for a great display of swing bowling beating the edge consistently and grabbing 1 wicket for 10 runs.
