Mallorca PRs V Northampton Cavaliers 24/09/03 - PRs Win By 15 Runs

An exciting late cameo from Peter Kirby was not enough to wrestle this game back from the PRs of Mallorca. Northampton's efforts proved in vain as the home side came out on top. Earlier it had started so well, with Wayne Smith removing opener George first ball of the match. However steady scores throughout and an excellent 50 from Shefeek took the Mallorca score to 219 for 7 off the allotted 40 overs. Some good shots played, but a key feature was the good placement and clever running, as not that many boundaries were struck. Dowlund's technique looked a little rigid as him struggled to 45, but King and Heaton both showed some quality.

For the Cavaliers, Carl Sommer bowled with discipline and Brian Driver, Wayne Smith, and James Brewin all claimed wickets. In the field the Cavaliers shined with both Smith and especially Kirby showed off their unique brand of "extreme fielding", diving around the solid, gravel outfield. A few cuts and bruises but nothing too bad!

Cavalier's reply was a little slow at the start, as Moven and Driver built a solid foundation. Unfortunately when Driver well for 16 in the 14th over it sparked a mini collapse as Lill, Alan Sommer and Ian Crossley all fell cheaply. Brewin showed a few nice shots, before being caught for 10, and it was up to the lower order to support Moven, whose steady batting meant he was approaching 50. Pete Kirby came in, as did Carl Sommer to run for the injured Moven. Kirby rotated the strike and Moven reached his much deserved 50. Unfortunately he fell soon after, racking up a good 54, caught by George off the bowling of Heaton.

Sommer stayed out to bat, and it was then that Kirby took the attack on, his big hitting combining excellently with the smart running of Sommer. Kirby soon amassed 43 hitting 7 fours, including 4 in a row, and with the score on 153 with 9 overs remaining, the visitors were back in with a shout. Unfortunately Kirby's brief innings was brought to a close, caught and bowled by Reader, but his 43 came in 30 minutes, and only 31 balls. If Sommer could continue to play well, supported by Barber, things should be tight. However some good bowling by Bodsworth and Reader, left the Cavaliers needing 28 off the last over with only Wayne Smith in the hutch. Still Sommer went for it advancing down the track, and heaving the bat into the outfield. The height of the bat was amazing as he threw it into the air, as was the sight of the shattered stumps as the crowd erupted to laugh at the poor batsman. Sommer bowled for 22. Smith and Barber held out each hitting a four as the innings closed on 204-9.

A good effort with Bodsworth the tidiest of the bowlers. MOM goes to Pete Kirby for his crazy fielding and explosive batting.
