Huncote 1st V Newbold Verdon 1st 18/05/03 - Newbold Win by 101 Runs

On a wet miserable day Huncote won the toss and invited Newbold to bat. Wayne and Knibbsy opened the bowling and kept things very tight for the first 15 or so overs but only managed to grab one wicket, caught Ross in the gully bowled Knibbs. TK replaced Wayne and didn’t bowl that well and was a little expensive but managed to pick up 5 wickets. Twiggy continued his mixed form as he grabbed an important wicket but also went for a few runs and Betty was even more expensive but got 3 wickets. After some poor bowling, fielding and catching Newbold were bowled out in the 45th over for 172.

Frank and Ian opened and Ian was out 3rd ball of the innings caught at short leg, Betty followed in similar fashion a couple of overs later. Ross came and went bowled after a couple of good shots and PK fended one to silly point as Huncote’s top order failed for the second week in a row. Brewin called up from the seconds didn’t last too long either as he too was bowled, Mark and Frank tried to stop the wickets tumbling but Frank who had been solid in defence eventually got caught at short leg. TK joined Mark and they managed to stay there for quite a while without really adding too many runs before Mark eventually got given out LBW. A good performance by the big man in what was really his first chance with the bat. Twiggy came in to join TK and the two looked solid managing to see out quite a few overs until the fist ball of the 43rd over when Twiggy edged one to slip, Knibbsy came in with 17 balls to survive he missed a straight one and was bowled first ball.

Wayne came in and managed to see out the last 4 balls of that over, the penultimate over TK blocked solidly before trying to grab a single off the last ball unfortunately he picked out a fielder and left Wayne to try and fend off the last over. Wayne blocked the first two before lobbing one to short mid off, Huncote lost. Terrible is one word for this performance and woeful batting is two that fit quite well. If the performances don’t pick up soon the good form of the last two seasons will be lost and the new players coming in might lose interest.

On the plus side Wayne bowled well on his return from Cosby, Knibbs kept things tight and TK got 5 and batted solidly for 20 odd overs for 12 runs trying to save the game, and was probably Huncote's pick of the players, with Bateman shining for Newbold. Next week sees a trip to a rejuvenated Sapcote in a game Huncote need to change their fortunes.
