Sapcote 1st V Huncote 1st 24/05/03 - Sapcote Win By 2 Wickets

A heavy rain shower just before the start of play made what already looked a sticky wicket even worse. Sapcote won the toss and put Huncote into bat in what promised to be a low scoring affair on the Village Playing Fields. Things started slowly for Huncote and Frank Hubbard was first to go bowled trying an extravagant cover drive before Driver and Crossley managed to keep the score board ticking over. Some straight bowling and a lack of pace in the wicket made scoring shots hard to come across and this was not helped by the large amounts of dead grass on the outfield slowing any shots down. Batsman came and went without impressing with Asad managing 19 and Crossley eventually out for 34. As the end of the innings approached Tim Kirby hit an impressive 6 but was dismissed LBW just a few balls later. Huncote closed on 107 all out in the last over of the innings.

Once again the tea at Sapcote was awful and the worst that we have had in the league, an official complaint will be made about this one as for £25 you expect a decent spread.

With mixed weather in the first half of the game the wicket was not getting any time to dry out so the Sapcote batsman faced the same problems that Huncote had encountered earlier. Knibbs managed to grab an early wicket but a second was slow coming before Tim Kirby had the other opened caught at first slip by Brian Driver. The Sapcote number 4 entered the game and proceeded to hit some big sixes slowly taking the game away from Huncote. Sapcote were cruising to victory until Carl Sommer grabbed 2 wickets in an over to add spice to the game. Tim Kirby was bought back to try and keep things tight and grab a couple of wickets he managed one and was difficult to get away. Things were getting tense with Sapcote needing about 15 runs and Huncote 2 wickets there was going to be a result either way when controversy hit. Kirby was bowling and what looked a regulation nick through to Hubbard behind the stumps was given not out. The Sapcote captain and number 10 had survived, there was a noise, deflection but yet no finger by the umpire, no one knows why. Finally with a few overs to spare Sapcote managed to scramble the run they needed to win by 2 wickets.

A tense game ruined by a poor decision, maybe Sapcote would have still won but at least it would have been in good spirit and fair. This result has left a bitter taste in the Huncote players mouths, on the plus side some excellent bowling by Kirby going for only 16 off of 15.2 overs and Haroon grabbed his first wickets for the club. Next week sees Broughton Astley visit the Huncote ground in what promises to be another exciting chapter to the season.
