Huncote 1st V Sapcote 1st 02/08/03 - Huncote win by 4 wickets

The much-anticipated clash at Huncote arrived along with blazing sunshine at the Huncote bowl. Crossley won the toss and invited Sapcote to bat first. With Knibbs back from holiday and Tim Kirby restored to opening the attack the rate was slow going. A few catches were put down but in contrast to this the ground fielding was excellent. Khawaja in the gully was particularly impressive stopping lots of balls low to the ground. After 27 overs the score had only managed to reach 39 for 0 wicket. Sapcote were now trying to pick up the rate but Huncote started to strike with a wicket from Driver and 4 from Sommer. Sommer’s spell was very impressive bowling wicket to wicket and just waiting for the batsman to make a mistake. Kirby came back for the last couple of overs from the top end as Huncote restricted Sapcote to a measly 115/5 from 45 overs.

Tea was taken and on a good track Huncote were confident of knocking off the 116 required to win the match. Crossley and Hubbard opened the batting with Hubbard adding 5 before chipping a ball up from a leading edge. Khawaja joined Crossley and these two batted very well scoring freely and running well between the wickets. Crossley reached yet another 50 but lasted just 4 more runs before he was caught. This sparked a bit of a collapse as 5 wickets fell for not many runs as Huncote pushed for a quick victory. Spencer, Kirby and Sommer all falling cheaply. Finally with lots of overs to spare Brewin and Driver steered Huncote home by 4 wickets and plenty of batting to spare.

An impressive performance by Huncote in the field but some sloppy batting nearly jeopardised an important win. Next week sees a trip to Broughton Astley where another victory is needed to have any chance of promotion.

MOM Carl Sommer for a good bowling display picking up 4 wickets.
