Huncote 1st V Swallows Green 1st 28/06/03 - Huncote Win by 88 Runs

Huncote took the spoils in this top of the table clash, at the Huncote Sports and Social Club. The heavy rain from the previous day had left the pitch a little wet and ropey, and unsurprisingly Swallows Green captain, Ley, won the toss, put Huncote into bat. The usual opening partnership of Frank Hubbard and Ian Crossley took up the challenge of facing John Healy and Pat Leeson.

The two bowlers kept the scoring very tight early on but could not get a break through. Soon both batsmen started scoring runs, and it was great to see Hubbard amongst them. A change in the bowling accounted for the first wicket. Shah replaced the tiring Leeson, and had Hubbard caught behind for 26. A good knock, from the wicket keeper batsman.

Ian Crossley was next out for another well played 43 runs, and it was up to the Huncote middle order to keep the score ticking over from 90-2 off 30 overs. This they did with Spencer (24), Kawaja (23), Pete Kirby (26), Carl Sommer (14) and Tim Kirby (15). A great team effort took the score to 178-8, a solid performance. Healey the pick of the bowlers, with 5-86 as he bowled through.

Huncote knew they would have their work cut out removing 10 Swallows Green wickets, but with the quality trio of Smith, Knibbs and Kirby, the home side always stood a chance. The wicket, although drier, still had a lot to offer, too much for both openers. Shah was caught by Crossley, and Blockley by Kawaja, both close in. Wayne Smith and Paul Knibbs the respective benefactors.

Wickets continued to fall, with Tim Kirby joining in. Knibbs had picked up 2 more, when Kirby removed 3 batsmen in a row, all bowled. The prize wicket of Beasley included, the old pro yorked by a Kirby quick delivery. True the track was lively but this was down to the bowler alone. The skipper Ley was digging in for the draw, and appeared to be batting excellently, until he flicked a Sommer delivery into the hands of Smith to fall for 17.

Late resistance came in the form of Leeson and Burke who rotated the strike well in a decent last wicket stand of 23. With just 3 overs remaining and the score on 90, Smith was reintroduced to the attack. This had the desired effect, Leeson caught by Tim Kirby for 10. A good fielding performance, with Smith once again the pick of the excellent home bowlers. Man of the match has to go to Frank Hubbard, who once again excelled behind the stumps, with 2 catches. The big left-hander also added a great early score to get the innings going.
