Huncote 1st V Walton le Wolds 1st 20/07/03 - Huncote Win by 226 Runs

An under strength Huncote side, was met by an even more depleted Walton le Wolds side, in this Sunday first team encounter. With a number of key players missing, Huncote recalled James Brewin and Alan Sommer from the seconds, and handed a fist team debut to 16-year-old James Swann. Walton seemed to only have 9 players, 2 of which seemed very young. Perhaps they were truly gifted..

Kettle, the away team captain, won the toss and elected to field. Driver was standing in as Huncote skipper as Crossley would take up the keeping duties. The talented batsman, felt opening, keeping, and skippering the side may be too much. Alan Sommer joined him at the crease to open the innings. Scoring looked brisk until Crossley was bowled by Smith, Tim Kirby run out by Karl Blood, and then Sommer caught behind snared by Blood again. With the score on 27 for 3, things looked bleak..

Pete Kirby joined Ross Spencer and the pair looked to build a partnership. The grafting of Kirby complemented the big hitting of Spencer and the pair added 100 for the fourth wicket before Spencer reached a superb fifty. Kirby then fell LBW to Blood for 36, with the score on 141, a partnership of 114 was much needed. Brewin and Ross then opened up and hit the ball to all parts, Spencer again dominated a partnership of 66, Brewin bowled for a swashbuckling 25. .

Carl Sommer then added another good innings, running well with the tiring Spencer, who was approaching another landmark. The right-handed bat had never before hit a century, but with his own score on 98 he hit another glorious drive to bring up a brilliant hundred. Sommer continued to help the rate along, as Spencer continued to find the boundary. Blood, who bowled throughout, looked as tired as the number 4 bat and the game looked beyond Walton as the score approached the 300 mark. .

With the last over in sight Spencer knew he needed a further 12 runs to bring up his own 150, and this he did hitting the last ball for two, and raising his bat for the third and last time. The score finished on 299 for 5, with Carl Sommer 26 not out, and the excellent Ross Spencer 150 not out, with 20 fours. For Walton, Blood was the pick of the bowlers working very hard, but Kimber and Smith were much more expensive..

The tea was excellent but the Walton innings proved a big anti climax. Now up to a compliment of 10 players, the quality of Wayne Smith and Tim Kirby was too much for the exhausted top order, with Smith claiming 3 wickets, and Kirby 1. Scrimshire picked up a sharp catch at point, Swann worked hard, and Crossley looked excellent with the gloves. Kettle added some stiff resistance for the away side, but Driver, who replaced Kirby, destroyed the other end picking up 4 wickets along the way. Carl Sommer finished the job, clean bowling the number 10, and Huncote had another 24 points..

A solid bowling and fielding performance from the Huncote team, but the damage was done with the bat. Spencer was in fine form and deservedly gets the man of the match. He was well supported in the middle order by Pete Kirby, James Brewin and Carl Sommer, and a score of 299 looked never on.
