Huncote Spearheads V Westonian Whirlybobs 01/06/03 - Huncote Win by 137 Runs

Ton up for TK as Spearheads send Whirlybobs Packing

On a glorious day at the Huncote bowl, Peter Kirby won the toss and elected to bat. With the usual opening batsman, and usually star man missing, Ian Crossley, Brewin and T Kirby were given the task of opening the batting. Brewin got off to his usual quick start powering to a quickfire 47 before falling bowled to young Wagstaff. This young lad was a tricky customer and spun the ball both ways making attacking shots very risky. The score at the first wicket was only 63 and many thought the scoring rate would slow from here on. This however did not occur with Kirby and Sommer taking on the challenge and with the score in the 120’s Kirby reached his half-century, his first of the season and his 5th overall.

Sommer eventually fell for 19 bowled while trying to make some space; still another 50 partnership was achieved. Jamie Smith joined in the fun and smashed a four before failing to lay bat on ball for about 4 overs, the next time he did was a nick straight through to the keeper. Scrimshire came and went run out for 0 and last weeks century partnership was reformed in the form of the Kirby brothers. No such luck this week though as P Kirby smashed a quick fire 8 before being caught behind. Possibly the most inform up and coming batsman came in to join T Kirby, young Frazer Hubbard. At this stage Kirby looked in bad shape for a ton as balls were running out and he still needed quite a few runs.

Then with a change of bowling Kirby exploded with 18 in one over, including 2 6’s and a 4. A slice of fortune saw the second 6 dropped over the boundary allowing Kirby to reach his maiden century. With a slight raise of his bat and his heart pumping he accepted the applause before getting back into position and going about adding as many more as possible in the last couple of overs. This he did and with the assistance of Frazer Huncote closed on 231-5 with Kirby 115 not out. What an innings with 5 6’s and 9 4’s, with this sort of form surely first team skipper Crossley will have to re-think his batting order.

As usual a quality Huncote tea was taken and Huncote took the field. W Smith and Swann opened the bowling, in the second over M Hubbard dropped a catch in the outfield off of Swann, many thought this could be damaging but in his next over Swann made up for this bowling the same batsman. The Wirlybobs were then trying to get a good foundation and this looked good until in his final over Wayne accounted for the other opener and the dangerous number 4. From this stage on the game never looked in doubt, Scrimshire was bowling at one end and young Ben Crossley at the other. Scrimshire was next to strike getting his first ever wicket bowling the batsman. Scrimshire also know as Ming from Flash Gordon was on fire bagging two more wickets and forcing skipper Kirby to remove him from the action for getting too many wickets.

In the remaining overs everyone had a bowl and Huncote eventually bowled the Wirlybobs out for 90 odd. With Sommer grabbing the final wicket, caught well by Swann at mid off. A good performance by Huncote capped off by an excellent birthday century by Tim Kirby. Scrimshire bowled well and this sort of result should breed confidence throughout the club.
