Huncote 1st V Whetstone 1st 10/05/2003 - Whetstone win by 3 wickets

Huncote lost the toss and were put into bat on a wet looking pitch. Early on the new ball was behaving badly and accounted for Frank, Ian, Brian and PK. Frank was bowled by a ball that kept low, Ian LBW by another one that kept low and Betty and PK were both caught by balls that leapt at them and caught the glove. Ross was also out cheaply caught and bowled as Huncote struggled to 24/5. Asad then proceeded to hit some good shots before he clipped one off his legs straight to square leg, Mark was then run out for 0 and Huncote were staring down the barrel at 52/7. With Haroon and TK at the crease things were not looking good especially with the bounce unpredictable.

The two batsman dug in and ran well between the wickets to keep the scoreboard ticking over, after a while they started to hit a few boundaries and the score steadily approached the 100 mark. Haroon was the major contributor in the partnership as he started to score more freely and the two were stealing runs all over the place. 100 was reached and soon after the 50 partnership. With about 8 overs to go Haroon and TK started trying the bigger shots and took the score to 127 before Haroon was caught at long off by a good catch. TK followed next ball trying to give himself some space he was bowled off his pads, Twiggy and Knibbs now at the crease added one run in the final over before Knibbs was run out. Huncote closed on a low total of 138 but at least it was something to bowl at.

TK and Knibbs opened the bowling and it wasn’t long before Knibbs grabbed two wickets both bowled, this bought the big hitting number four to the crease and he was soon on his way swinging at anything wide of the stumps. TK clean bowled the other batsman but the number 4 continued his destructive form by hitting some big shots including a huge 6 off of Twiggy’s first ball. TK then found that spot on the pitch and bowled the number 5 with one that kept low, this was followed up by agaion bowling the number 4 for a quick fire 48. Whetstone then started to build a useful partnership which was helped by Twiggy dropping a simple catch off of his own bowling, Betty came into the attack and soon grabbed a wicket and the scoring rate started to slow down as the target approached. Betty grabbed a second well held by PK in the covers but it was too little too late as Whetstone crept over the line with 3 wickets left and a few overs in the bank.

A good recovery with the bat by Huncote was not capitalised on with the ball and with some poor fielding cost Huncote the chance of a second victory of the season.
