Burton on the Wolds 1st XI V Huncote 1st 26/06/04 - Huncote Win By 124 Runs

Huncote came out on top on a wet Saturday afternoon in Burton. Unsurprisingly Burton selected to field on a damp wicket, but this backfired as the two openers set up a decent score for the away side. Ian Crossley scored 22 and Frank Hubbard 21 as Burton bowled tidily early on. Mark Schutz (30) and Tim Kirby (26) added vital contributions, but it was the next pair that set up the big total. Wickets for Lang, Markley and Shipman.

Ross Spencer was going well when the rain fell heavily and the players took an early tea. 5 overs were lost off each innings and Huncote had only 7 overs left with 142 on the board. With Brewin joining Spencer soon after the resumption, the fireworks started with 82 scored off the 7 overs. Brewin the main contributor with 1 four and 6 huge sixes. Ross passed 50 first but soon James Brewin also reached the mark. Both finished not out with the score on 224-4.

The pitch and outfield were very wet when Huncote took to the field, and the opening pair of Smith and Kirby found it difficult to go full tilt. Despite this Kirby had Moore caught by brother Pete Kirby at point, and Smith accounted for Stenning clean bowled. Deabill and Markley added some stiff resistance without adding many to the score, before Smith found the edge of Markley's bat, caught by Hubbard. Freestone joined Deabill who was next to go. Some smart fielding by Crossley at midwicket led to confusion and a run out.

Wilkinson and Blount looked to counter attack, and Smith took the brunt, struggling with his run up in the wet. This brought Sommer into the attack and he accounted for Blount, caught by Brewin in the gully. The rain now started to fall heavily with the score on 80 for 6 with 10 overs to go. Wilkinson was in full flow though passing 50, but the umpire was right to take the fielders off. Two more overs were lost when the rain had stopped and players resumed the contest. Driver now into the attack had Wilkinson stumped by the impressive Hubbard, and then bowled Lang two balls later.

Two wickets needed but Rush and Weston were offering stiff resistance fro the draw. The score was now over 100 with the pressure on and the field in. Just as the draw looked likely a Sommer leg side delivery was brilliantly taken by Hubbard and Weston was stumped with bat high in the air. Now the game was on with the entire field in and 4 overs to pick up the last wicket. Driver duly obliged as Paul Knibbs expertly caught a full toss at short midwicket, Rush out for 10.

A good win in difficult conditions for Huncote, and MOM must go to James Brewin whose 50 not out off 20 balls made Burton's task almost impossible.
