Loughborough Carillon V Huncote Spearheads 08/06/04 - Spearheads Win By 51 Runs

On a hot day, the Spearhead side lead by Pete Kirby visited Loughborough Carillon for the first time.  Kirby won the toss and elected to bat, at what was a very nice ground with great facilities.  Swords joined the skipper at the crease, and the two looked to add some early runs.  A change of bat for Kirby got his mind back to the game and he started to find some big shots down the ground, as Swords added good support.  One big shot too many though, was hit skyward and Kirby was caught for 44, off the bowling of Trevis.

A solid start meant James Swann could bed himself in, as Swords started to apply some pressure on the home side bowlers.  A change of bowling though did for Swords as he was bowled by a sharp in swinger from Rowe.  Webb joined Swann as the two built up a good partnership.  Some excellent drives from Swann, and some firm striking from Webb kept the scoreboard ticking along.  When Swann fell for an excellent 44, caught at midwicket, Tim Kirby came in to up the pace.  Webb soon past the 50 mark for the first time hitting two huge sixes along the way in his excellent innings.  The score closed at 231 for 3 off the allotted 40 overs.

In reply the Carillons looked to be positive, but Ben Crossley soon accounted for both openers, each caught behind by Mitch Hubbard.  Some good fielding from Swann lead to a run out, and a Sommer slower ball gave Pete Kirby a diving catch at mid off.  Rowe though lead a spirited fight back, with Smith and Scrimshire feeling the brunt of his hitting.  Just after he passed 50 though, the young spinner ripped one out of the leg stump rough to have Rowe caught behind for 56.  Smith donned the gloves as the bowling was shared around, with Steve Jacques looking good on debut.  He picked up one wicket, as did Swann, and Swords.  A good innings from the tiring Reed kept the score going until he was run out to end the match with the home side still 51 runs behind.

MOM has to go to the big man Craig Webb who picked up his first 50 for the club.  Swann's elegant innings, and Ben Crossley's excellent swing bowling ran the shoulders close.
