15/05/04 - Great Glen V Huncote

Huncote 228-8, Great Glen 88 all out - Huncote win by 150 runs.  View Scorecard

On the day of the first real cricketing weather of the season, Huncote arrived at Great Glen looking to build on last weeks performance. Great Glen won the toss and inserted Huncote, Crossley and Hubbard opened the batting and were soon in stride running well between the wickets. Once again the pair added a useful opening stand of over 40 before Crossley got adjudged LBW, soon after Hubbard followed in similar circumstances. Pete Kirby and Schutz were now at the crease and a glorious straight six from the latter was followed by a cut straight to Hinks at point, once again a start for the new man but some promising shots. Great Glen were getting more into the game as a few wickets fell but the scoring rate was always good and a big score was on the cards. Spencer added 17 in his usual style and elegance before being bowled by Buxton leaving Huncote 4 down and enforcing a switch in the batting order.

Hubbard lectures Knibbs

Driver was sent in to steady the ship and consolidate a quick scoring start, it was now Kirby’s turn to entertain the crowd as two big sixes were dispatched as well as some neat running between the wickets. Kirby by now on 44 was searching for a 50 when he tried one big shot too many and was stumped, a good innings but the number 3 needs to start converting these into half centuries. Brewin joined Driver and by now the innings was approaching its final 15 or so overs, this was ideal for Brewin as in his 16 balls faced he smashed 2 sixes and 2 4’s to amass 28 runs before being bowled. Tim Kirby came to the crease with the instructions to keep the momentum going, at first it was all Driver as he showed his true class. Cover driving regularly and a few waltzes down the wicket to hit straight, Kirby then joined in the fun with a 6 over long off and some straight fours. Driver was run out for 37 on the final ball of the penultimate over trying to run a quick single. 11 runs were added in the final over before Kirby was run out on the last ball trying to get a 2. Still 36 from 30 balls from the all rounder was just what was needed leaving Huncote on 238/8.

A quality tea was taken and Huncote took the field, Kirby and Knibbs formed the opening partnership for the first time this year with Kirby opening up. It was a tight start before Knibbs found the edge of Sodi with the ever-safe hands of Schutz waiting at first slip. Kirby then struck forcing an edge to the waiting hands of Hubbard. With Snashall and Hinks now at the crease Great Glen looked to push on with Hincks playing some big strokes, Spencer was unlucky not to hold onto a sharp chance and a few think edges evaded fielders. The for the second year running Snashall called a kamikaze run and was run out with a direct hit from Sommer.

The next partnership started to build with Hinks continuing his big shots, Kirby though broke the partnership as Pete Kirby took a high catch going backwards at point. Hinks was next to go as first he drove through Knibbs legs at long off for four before picking out Knibbs the very next ball on the boundary for 41.  Knibbs adopted a very peculiar celebration as Sommer picked up a wicket! From here on in Great Glen looked consigned to battling for a draw, Kirby picked up 2 more wickets bowled before the final pair started to dead bat everything. After a few overs of this Crossley was about to ring the changes when Kirby struck again bowling the final batsman and finishing with 5 wickets.

MOM: Tim Kirby 36 from 30 balls and 5 for 37 contributing to a massive 150 run victory for Huncote.
