Gumley Gearboxes V Huncote Spearheads 23/08/04 - Gumley Win by 8 Wickets

A new look side at an interesting venue, the road through the outfield the highlight of the unique setting.  This didn't detract from the cricket though as Pete Kirby won the toss and elected to bat.  Gransden and Swords started steadily before the taller right hander missed a Wade yorker to be bowled for 3.  Swords and Tim Kirby put on a decent 50 partnership, before a low bouncing delivery saw off Kirby for 32.  Swords was joined by Mark Bird, but fell soon after bowled by A Pickering for 31.

Mark Bird looked to get on top of the bowling, but Jamie Smith came and went for just 1.  Huw Davies looked to get the score moving again, and the two batsmen set about building another partnership.  As Bird then Davies started to look to the aerial route, Pickering had other ideas bowling the leftie for a decent 29.  Mark Bird the next to go with the score approaching 150, caught behind for 42.  Brewin only added 3, as Randall Bird and Pete Kirby added some decent late runs, this without striking a single boundary.  In the end 185-7 looked a competitive total.

Duncan Pickering has other ideas though, as the left hander rode his luck to hit an unbeaten ton.  Dropped on a number of occasions, the Spearheads needed to improve their fielding to have any chance of winning this match.   Jason Scrimshire picked up the only wicket to fall to a bowler, well caught low down by Kirby in the covers.  Gransden picked up a run out, but it was left to Pickering to win the game and complete his 100, with a six over mid wicket.  Mention to Randall Bird's decent seam bowling early on, the only bowler who could keep the run rate down....
