Mossdale Hailstorm V Huncote Spearheads 29/08/04 - Spearheads Gain Draw

It was a late summers afternoon, and as is customary with this seasons weather there were clouds as far as the eye could see. The venue was Leicester Mossdale and the visitors were the rag-tam concoction of Huncote, Newbold Verdon, croft and Rolf. They went by the name of the Spearheads and they were fresh off a humbling experience in Gumley Safari Park the week before. The Spearheads were lead out to the field of battle by one Peter Kirby, who lost the toss and was asked  to bat on a wicket that looked to have a few demons in it.

PK and Forrest rode out dressed in their customary white outfits and locked horns with the Mossdale opening bowlers. Rolf and Scrimmy were the overseers of the laws of the game i.e. umpires. The latter of which had to no ball the Mossdale opener 4 or 5 times in one over. After a solid start to the proceedings, PK fell victim to a wide delivery that would have tempted the very best of players. He was caught after some Rolf style juggling at mid-off. Next in was Huw "the lion heart" Davies. He and Forrest continued to pile on the runs, building on the foundation laid by their skipper. But it would not last long as Forrest was next to fall. The new man at the crease was crofts 2nd XI opening batsman, on debut, Luke Creissen. His innings was, in a word, lethargic. 26 runs in a 100 odd run partnership, that was disrupted by torrential downpours forcing an early tea, with Davies, and not a single boundary struck by the debutant.

Meanwhile, at the other end, a fiery display of power hitting by the Newbold player including a few monstrous sixes. The rest of the innings was quiet as Mark Bird came and went for 3. But the end of the innings was signalled when dings was given out by DK, adjudged to have been lbw just 4 runs short of his maiden century. Skipper Pete Kirby declared on 165-5. Then the mighty Spearheads took to the field to defend this reasonably attainable score. A couple of early wickets from Bernie gave the Huncote's a chance of victory. Then came the deadly spin quartet of Granno, Mark Bird, PK and Scrimmy to take over the reins.

Huw was the keeper for the innings and would prove to be crucial in the hunt for victory. granno, a renowned seamer, possessed a quicker ball that would scare the living daylights out of the bravest of batsman (and keepers). After a couple of missed chances, Rolf held on to a catch!!! (this is not a typing error). There was a light hearted moment in the field when DK misfielded a ball under his foot on the boundary and Jason ran away from the ball as it soared into the brightly lit sky. But we've all had our say on these matters so we'll leave it at that.

4 stumpings from the keeper off the spinners merely highlighted a fantastic performance by Huw Davies. BUT it could have been better when towards the end of the hailstorm innings, he dropped a catch off the bowling of bird. Luckily for the Newbold dweller, Scrimmy was around to pick up the pieces and hold onto the catch (although he will claim a breakdown in communication happened here, i think we all know what really happened). Mossdale needed 12 off the last over with a couple of wickets in hand, and the brilliance of Bird ensured they did not reach their goals as he bowled a maiden.
