Newbold Verdon 2nd Team V Huncote 2nd 19/06/04 - Huncote Get Losing Draw

On a cold and damp day in Newbold, Stratford won the toss and asked Newbold to bat. The wicket was quite dry thanks to some covers that had been laid out and Huncote entered the field looking to get off to a great start. With John Smith swinging the ball like a banana and Swann bowling a tight line the Newbold opening partnership of Linley and Henson were restricted to a only a few runs in the opening overs. Linley hitting a couple of early boundaries.

Both openers fell to Swann, Linley bowled by one which cut back and took the top of off stump and Henson driving straight to Spencer who took a good catch above his head. This brought Wykes and Chapman to the crease who looked to be building a solid partnership before a mix up in calling meant Wykes was stranded half way down the wicket and was run out by Farmer. A good partnership between Chapman and Stathem then developed Huncote struggling to make the breakthrough. Chapman looked composed in hitting a number of good cover drives for four whilst Stathem held up an end well. Crossley bowled well and restricted the Newbold score.

Then entered the man of the day, Stratford, who entered the attack and got the breakthrough, Chapman caught behind by Hubbard for 41.  Soon followed by Stathem stumped by Hubbard for 21. The fall of these wickets had brought M Boulton to the crease who proceeded to swing very hard and hit the ball to the boundary in all directions. Spencer replaced Crossley and once again bowled tightly. Down the other end Stratford removed Lewis for 4 edging one into the safe hands of Sir Alan Sommer. Swann then returned to the attack and bowled poorly getting smashed around by Boulton.  The bowler feeling the gusts of wind come off the bat as he swung. Spencer then caught Norton off the bowling of Swann for 0 and Stratford removed the dangerous Boulton bowled for 22. A few boundaries later Stratford ended the Newbold innings bowling Bott for 12 and Ball for 5 to leave Carr not out 6. Stratford ending the innings with 6 wickets. Newbold 163 all out.

The opening partnership of Spencer and Lill took to the field and found it hard going early on Lewis finding the inside edge of the bat on a number of occasions. But soon Spencer and Lill started to adjust to the bounce hitting a number of boundaries including to big sixes from Spencer. Unfortunately a runner had to be called for the injured Spencer and this slowed down the scoring. Lill was the first to go being bowled by Carr for 30 Sir Alan soon followed caught by Linley off the bowling of Carr for 1. Lill the took over the running duties from Hubbard as he entered the arena but couldn't really affect the score being bowled again for Carr for 3. Bowling hero Stratford entered the field hit a four but was dismissed caught Henson off the bowling of Lewis.

Spencer soon followed finding it difficult to add to his score after needing the runner caught by Wykes again off the bowling of Lewis. Craig 'shoulders' Webb entered the crease and was more tentative than usual but still found the boundary three times with some mighty shoulder blows. By the time Swann entered the crease Huncote were already batting for points, he lasted a couple of overs edging a four through keeper and first slip much to the annoyance of Lewis, he was dismissed a couple of overs later for 7 chipping one back to the bowler Ball for a wicket in his first over. Hubbard faced one ball and ended 0 not out, Webb saw Huncote through to the 125 mark for an extra batting point ending his innings on 16 not out and Huncote 125-6. Carr the pick of the bowlers getting three wickets and bowling tightly.

Man of the match: Eddie Stratford claiming six victims to dismiss Newbold for 163.
