Twycross 1st V Huncote 1st 05/06/04 - Huncote Win By 5 Wickets

On a hot day Twycross won the toss and elected to bat on what looked a good batting track. Smith and Kirby opened the bowling looking to put in a good performance against the team top of the league. It didn't take long for Smith to get in the wickets as Lee was caught by Spencer trying to drive and Taylorson caught by Sommer trying a similar shot. 10 for 2 soon became 17 for 3 as Kirby forced a nick from Allman that was well held by Driver at 2nd slip. Machin and Collins tried to steady the ship but with the score on 28 Huncote struck again as Smith got Collins caught by P Kirby and then some brilliant fielding from Adcock ran out Horton with a direct hit.

Huncote were on fire in the field and Twycross were struggling. North joined his captain and the two tried to simply stay there while scoring very few runs. After 12 excellent overs Smith was replaced by Knibbs who took a couple of overs to find his line letting a couple of fours be hit, it took Sommer replacing Kirby to start the collapse again. North tried to flick a leg side delivery only to overbalance and be brilliantly stumped by Hubbard. 60 for 6 was bad but when Spencer caught Holland for 0 off Knibbs and Hallam was caught by Crossley off Sommer for 4, Twycross were falling apart at 66 for 8.

It was now Machin's turn to up the scoring rate as he crashed 2 fours before cutting straight to Adcock at point off Smith for 40. When Smith was caught by a diving Schutz at slip off Sommer Twycross were all out for 96.

After tea Crossley and Hubbard took the field looking to continue their good run of partnerships. Unfortunately it was not to be as Hubbard nicked behind for 0, Spencer hit two nice straight 4's before being bowled for 8 and Huncote were stuttering along at 24 for 2. P Kirby and Crossley got things back on track as they added 32 runs with Crossley scoring 34 before being bowled by a full toss trying to hit the next field down. Kirby soon followed with the score on 60 as he edged to slip off Machin.

Schutz was now at the crease and after getting away with a streaky inside edge for 2 he then hit one up in the air to cover where two Twycross fielders preceded to collide trying to take the catch. Maybe this could have changed the game but with plenty of batting to come and only 30 needed Huncote were still well in the box seat. 2 Overs later and Schutz made Twycross pay as he hit two huge sixes one of which hit a car. Driver then joined in as he straight drove a 6 and soon the scores were level. At this point Schutz gave away his wicket but a quick single between Driver and Adcock saw Huncote safely home by 5 wickets.

Possibly the best fielding display seen by a Huncote side for many years saw them triumph over Twycross and overtake them in the league. Next week sees Huncote entertain Sapcote who they must be professional about and play to this level again.

MOM Wayne Smith for his great bowling and 4 wickets, although all 11 in the field deserve a mention for a great team display.
