Birstall Village V Huncote 1st 16/07/2005 - Huncote Gain Winning Draw

On a hot, sunny, picturesque day in the village of Birstall, two teams played out an entertaining game of cricket. Birstall had the better of the early exchanges before Huncote's young left hander, Frazer Hubbard, turned the game on its head. After 24 overs and Huncote 58-3, Hubbard joined Peter Kirby and the fireworks started. Tim Kirby, Haroon Khawaja and Frank Hubbard all made starts but failed to go on, and the stage was set.

Birstall bowler Andy Corbett was first to taste Hubbard's sweet blows. The veteran bowler, renound for keeping things tight with excellent lines, lengths and changes of pace, had bowled his first 12 overs for just 12 runs and Khawaja's scalp. The first over against Hubbard however disappeared for 16 including a sweet 6 over long on. Kirby joined in striking a crisp boundary off Oldcorn to get him going, the bowler suffering after gaining the wicket of Hubbard.

The pair went on to run well between the wickets, and hit some timely blows as they added 96 runs in just 12 overs. Hubbard was the first to pass 50 and also the first to go, caught in the deep off the bowling of Fisher. An excellent innings spanning just 39 balls. Kirby looked to accelerate with the help of Brewin and he too passed 50, and the innings was set for an interesting finale. The opening bowler North returned to the action and had Kirby caught at slip for 51 off just 59 balls.

Brewin spanked a few fours before being well caught for double figures, and it was left to the young pups of Huncote to get the total past 200. This they did with some excellent running, Swann and Danny Adcock taking twos all round the field and setting up a decent total. Adcock went for 17, Dyke fell for 1, as Swann finished 11 not out, the score a decent 210-9. Wayne Smith picked up his customary not out.

A decent tea followed with the fans favourite being the triple chocolate bars. The visiting captain Kirby taking a liking to them especially, much to the annoyance of James Swann who lost his bar in a seniority issue.

Huncote took to the field knowing quick wickets were the order of the day. The two Birstall openers were very dangerous players, Galpin and Lord, and removing them would be key. Dyke started with a fiery spell, as Smith supported from the other end. Both batsmen looked unsettled against the diminutive paceman Dyke and Galpin lost his wicket early on, well caught at backward point by Peter Kirby. Dyke's tale was up and when Ferrer was caught behind things looked good for maximum points for the visitors.

Snuggs and Lord had other ideas as they build an excellent partnership. Snuggs rode his luck being dropped three times in a poor display of fielding, although he took advantage with some well timed boundaries. Swann and Tim Kirby came into the attack looking to break through and Swann was very unlucky not to get an early wicket, as the captain himself was guilty for one drop at mid off.

Snuggs past 50 and Birstall were into the hundreds when Lord fell, bowled Swann for 42. A well deserved wicket and very timely for Huncote. North looked to press on with Snuggs and the game was still in the balance. However four quick wickets, Snuggs bowled Tim Kirby, Glasgow LBW to Tim Kirby, North caught behind off the bowling of Dyke, and Grest bowled by Dyke first ball, changed that. Huncote now pressed for the win. Corbett and Fisher had other ideas though blocking out well, and a late flurry took them to 178-7.

MOM to Frazer Hubbard for a quick fire 50.
