Huncote 1st V Leicester Caribbean 1st 29/05/2005 - Huncote Win by 77 Runs
Huncote
fielded a youthful looking team for the replayed first round encounter v
Leicester Caribbean’s with Frazer Hubbard and James Swann both included.
Huncote skipper returning to the side specially won the toss and elected to bat
on a warm afternoon. Frank Hubbard and Ian Crossley started off slowly before
Crossley edged an attempted cut behind. Mitch Hubbard joined his dad and the
pair put on a good partnership with plenty of quick singles and some crazy
Hubbard senior batting. Mitch though was riding his luck with the Caribbean’s
fielders allowing the young left hander plenty of lives.
Huncote by now were adding some quicker runs but losing a
few wickets along the way, although everyone was chipping in. Brewin following
on from Saturday’s heroics with a quick fire 20 and Frazer Hubbard showing
great maturity at such a young age top scoring with 36 not out as Huncote closed
on 163 for 6.
Luke
Dyke and Wayne Smith opened the bowling with Dyke struggling with a bad back but
still generating some good pace. But today was to be Wayne Smith’s day,
bowling with good energy, pace and rhythm he was straight in his stride. A
magnificent spell of bowling left him with figures of 4 for 13 from 9 overs.
Still the game was in the balance with Huncote’s two openers bowled out and
skipper Kirby needed to get through some overs from the so called ‘part
time’ bowlers. He turned first to James Swann who bowled great lines and kept
the coring down against.
Next
the leg spin of brother Peter Kirby and with great success and Kirby removed
Porter first ball and continued to bamboozle the Caribbean’s batsman with a
variety of turn and bounce with a little flight and guile to boot! Swann at the
other end was now in full flow producing match figures of 3 for 10 from 7 overs.
With T Kirby warming up his brother decided enough was enough and had Kenny
Pilgrim stumped to wrap up a convincing victory for Huncote and the pleasure of
a quarter final against Newbold Verdon.
