Loughboro Carillion V Huncote Spearheads 24/04/2005 - Huncote Win By 70 Runs
....full match report.
"What a day of days. The inaugural day of the 2005 cricket season began
awash with spring sunshine and smiley happy faces as Mitchell M Hubbard took his
troops to the picturesque Loughborough Nook for the season opener.
The travelling party was made up of a youthful looking backbone, fleshed out
with the experience of Shoulders Webb and "I'm too old for this"
Farmer, and a healthy band of Barmy Army support.
Hubbard Snr Jnr started as he meant to go on by winning the toss and chucking
the 2's into bat on a wicket that resembled a crusty cob, dry and flaky on top
but soft and enticing underneath. Perennial underachiever Max Swords accompanied
new boy Luke Creissen to the crease and the pair were met by the steely glares
of two young nippers who were to open the attack for LCCC. A few overs in and
one of the said young uns ripped out Creissens middle peg with a submarine style
attack from a ball just short of a length. J Brewin strode to the crease to join
Swords and the pair put on a quick fire 60, most of the quick fireness coming
from the bat of.......Brewin. How did you guess? Boundaries from both players
scythed through and over the long soggy outfield before a change of attack saw a
wily young spinner bamboozle Brewin with a sharp turner.
Young Crossley came to the crease and looked confident before succumbing to a
larger than life second change bowler and while Swords picked up the pace, the
Huncote middle order looked to be leaving him in the lurch. Shoulders went
cheaply and Swann entered the arena for the first time this season feeling and
looking "lethargic". This lethargy and a distinct lack of ear ability
meant Swords was run out for a confident 44 after almost completing 2 whole runs
in a horrendous mix up.
I then went to the garage for a Calypso so missed the run in but was back in
time to see Swann dismissed for a laid back yet promising 27 and Hubbard Jnr
batter 41 quick fire slogs with true Hubbard aggression accompanied by Hubbard
Snr Jnr in a heart rendering time in the middle that would have bought a tear to
Fun Times eyes.
206 from 40 overs and with the pre match words of the skip reverberating in
their ears: "Unless we get 200 I am going to bowl 8 overs", the
Spearheads could feel justifiably proud of their achievements considering the
outfield hardly rendered value for money on any proper cricket shots.
Tea was taken and was remarkable only for its deceiving sausage rolls, not
containing sausage, but a mixture of cheese and onion mushed together. Next
thing you know we will be getting served egg and onion sambo's!
The Spearheads took to the field looking resplendent and confident of completing
a victory for Hubbards captaincy debut.
Opening the attack were Ishan and Swann and both bowled tight lines, Ishan
providing the first breakthrough in the very first over. Swann was stingy in
style and frustrated the batsmen allowing BC, Ishan and Hubbard Jnr to pick up
wickets, ripping the heart from the LCCC batting line up and setting up a less
than tense finale. A spirited knock from an LCCC youngster delayed the
inevitable but Scrimshire, Swords and Webb picked up wickets, Shoulders
especially stealing the show with 3 stupendous stump based attacks leaving the
result in no doubt.
A good fielding display, Hubbard Snr Jnr bagging 3 catches the pick of the
bunch, and some disciplined bowling meant an all round terrific day. All
involved, some good early season performances and a win meant the lads went home
with even bigger smiles of their happy faces.
Congratulations and salutations to you all!!!!!"
