Huncote 1st V Newbold Verdon 1st 09/07/2005 - Huncote Lose by 4 Wickets
Huncote had no answer to Paul Bateman’s opening burst which effectively
sealed this match. After being asked to bat, Huncote lost opener Crossley
without a run on the board and things got worse when Spencer, Khawaja, Tim
Kirby, and Mark Schutz all fell to the quick opening bowler. James Brewin picked
out Ryan Bird on the boundary off of Gransden’s bowling and Huncote were
staring at 33-6.
Peter Kirby and opener Frank Hubbard then ground out a decent if not slow
scoring partnership. Hubbard took charge of the two to pass his first 50 of the
season as the score as nudged to 100 with 5 overs remaining. Kirby fell to part
time bowler Ryan Bird for 28, and Frank went to Bateman’s return, bowled for
56.Frazer Hubbard was run out before Luke Dyke and Wayne Smith shared a few
blows to take the score to 123 before Dyke was bowled in the last over.
Tempers flared in the second innings as Smith had French LBW with the first
ball of Newbold’s reply. When Bird and Neal Bateman both fell early, both
bowled Smith, Huncote smelt an unlikely victory. Wilkinson and Paul Bateman had
other ideas though as they both got their heads down, batting steadily and
solidly taking the score towards the 100 mark.
Peter Kirby had a go, as did Tim Kirby but wickets were hard to find, before
a late flurry bought Huncote back into the game. Bateman fell to Dyke’s slower
ball, Wilkinson was caught in front and Davies was caught in the gully after a
brisk flurry of runs. Huncote’s hopes of a come back were dashed though as
Bell stroked Newbold to a 4 wicket win.
A decent low scoring match on a tricky wicket in the face of some good
bowling on both sides.
