Huncote CC 1st XI V Hathern Old

It was a hot still day in the small village of Hathern the other side of Loughboro. A band of eleven Huncote cricketers arrived at the ground some the right way others namely Twiggy taking a detour, a bystander commented ‘He was looking for a pub to buy a pint of Chestnut Mild from!!’. Anyway back to the cricket Adcock and Lill both back in the side were pushing the Silk to bat others maybe wiser heads were suggesting the opposite, after ten minutes of debate Silk lost the toss and Huncote were put in.

Silk and Max opened the batting and got Huncote of to a fast start until Silk inside edged one back onto his pads then onto the stumps, out this way for the first time and a way which would be repeated on Sunday!!. Max lasted not much longer edging to the keeper and when PK followed yorked 4 balls later things were not looking good. Pete Lill joined his best mate Spenny at the middle and they steadied things for a few overs before Pete got caught one handed at midwicket. Mitch came to the crease and never looked comfortable but somehow was hanging in there. Spenny was next to go getting out in similar fashion to Lill, Huncote were struggling and sent in Adcock to try and pick things up. It wasn’t long before Betty joined Adcock, Mitch got caught and threw his bat 30 yards but as I didn’t see the incident I can say no more about it at the moment. .

These two started to put together a useful partnership coming together with the score on 78 – 6 they took it through the 100 mark with a mixture of good shots and crazy running. Adcock cracked the shot of the day, rocketing the ball all the way along the deck through mid on for four. Even the bowler was applauding the fine shot. Adcock who middled one to the keeper at one stage and didn’t get given out got his come up pence when he was adjudged LBW; TK also got given out this way and a collapse looked back on the cards. Firstly Somner and Betty then Somner and Knibbsy added valuable runs and Huncote managed a reasonable score of 153 all out after 47 overs.

Tea was taken, which was noted as far from the best we have received and the players took the field. TK bowled down the hill and Knibbsy took the other end. The Hathern openers were not afraid to play their shots and got off to a great start with both openers scoring freely. TK was the first to strike bowling one opener middle stump, another soon followed caught by Silk at mid on. Betty replaced Knibbsy who bowled a bit loosly. By now TK had his third victim caught by Pete Lill, his fourth came a few balls later trapping their number 5 plumb in front, Huncote were reeling Hathern in. Betty was soon in on the act grabbing a wicket before TK came in again found the edge and Mitch took a good diving catch behind the stumps. A second fivefer of the season for TK and Huncote were now firmly in control.

TK was given a breather replaced by Somner but Betty kept the shackles on taking another wicket. Somner started well but then got loose and was dispatched all around the park by the opposition skipper. Hathern were trying to get themselves back into the game and the skipper and their opener were putting together a useful partnership. Just as they were back in the game Betty took his third wicket, that of their skipper and things were looking good again for the Huncote boys. Adcock replaced Somner, but it was Betty who struck again bowling their number 10 and claiming his fourth wicket.

After an over at the number 11 Adcock was relieved of bowling with TK back on, and with the 6th ball of his over hw clean bowled their last batsman and the game was Huncotes!!!!  Some great fielding, average batting and some good bowling all contributed to a good win, the second of the season and one more spells twenty quid to both wicket takers from Jamie Smith.

MOM: Tim Kirby another fine bowling display well backed up be vice skipper Betty Driver..
Second Team
Winning Draw for the 2nds and a ton for Frank

Huncote 190-5 Hathern 150-4 Eddie lost the toss and Huncote were put into bat on a good wicket we opened slowly scoring 14 runs off the first 12 overs before Jamie decided to have a walk down the wicket and was stumped for 5 Al Sommer joined Frank at the crease and promptly started with 2 fours on the trot the pace picked up and Frank became the major contributor reaching his 50 in the 29th over.

Alan was out for 33 helping to put on a stand of 119 with Frank for the second wicket. Brew came in next and hit a quick fire 14 before being bowled. Eddie came in and helped to guide Frank to his first ever 100 in any type of cricket, his 100 included a five and 9 fours he was finally out in the 42nd over for 104 with Huncote finishing on 190-5. Hathern started slowly against the bowling of JW and Brew JW wasn't having much sucess as he had the opener dropped twice.

Hathern reaced 118 before the first wicket fell with Eddie catching off Geoff's bowling in the next over the pair reverse roles with Geoff cathing the other opener off Eddie's bowling Frank the got another stumping this season but a draw seemed the only likley result on a good batting track after their openers went and so it proved with Hathern finishing at 150-4 Result Winning draw for Huncote victory unrealistic so Alan and Eddie just batted out the remaining overs scoring runs where possible and finishing at 87 for 2 wickets.

Huncote Sunday XI V Westonians

Everyone turned up looking jaded and with skipper PK with a hangover things did not look good from the start. PK won the toss and elected to bat and things got off to a worse start then imagines with both Silk and Max out in the first few overs. TK and Pete Lill took over and put on a steady partnership before Pete Lill was bowled for 18. TK followed for 19 caught at mid off. Betty and Al Sommer then both bagged 20’s before also departing, batting after this was not much to talk about. Huncote survived their 40 overs scoring 125 runs with the highlight definitely Twiggys 6 over long on.

Tea was its usual great stuff with some nice melons and many nice sandwiches. Struth even treated us to trifle this week, which went down well amongst the ranks.

Huncote took the field with Swanny and Brewin opening, Brewin started by firing the ball continuously down leg side then winging when PK put a fielder round there to save the single. Swanny as usual bowled a tight line and kept it tight from one end, Brewing was more wayward but managed to pick up a couple of wickets from his 8 overs. Somner and Betty took over and the bowling was distinctly average with, Somner bagging a wicket and Betty looking stiff from the previous days efforts. Catches then preceded to be dropped some difficult and some sitters which embarrassed certain players.<p>

Anyway Westonians were cruising to the total when TK and Silk came onto ball bot keeping it tight and both getting two wickets, Silk in consecutive balls. Westonians needed 22 from 12 overs this then changed to 9 from 3 overs. They managed to reach their target with 3 wickets remaining and an over to spare.

All in all a very Sunday game, with poor batting and fielding and bowling not much better. Never mind at least the Saturday teams got good results. Next game in two weeks hopefully Huncote can manage a better performance like the one I am sure England will put out on Friday!!.

MOM:  Somner for hitting a 6!!
