Huncote Six-A-Side 2004 - 4th July 2004

A great day was had by all in the first annual Huncote six-a-side tournament.  With only one sour point early on, as Narborough and Littlethorpe were forced to pull out after failing to raise a squad.  This was not to spoil what was an excellent day with Huncote the eventual winnings, beating the excellent Westonians in the final.

Due to the unpredictability of the draw, the three Huncote sides were all together in Group A.  Huncote CC saw of the challenge of the Huncote Youth and the Huncote Spencer's, to top the group.  The Spencer's were runners up, after they beat the Youth in their match.  Huncote through to the semis.

Group B saw three heavy weights fighting it out.  Newbold beat both Twycross and Earl Shilton to top the group, whilst Twycross' win against Shilton, and their good run rate saw them through with Newbold to the semis.  Earl Shilton disappointed to be out, in what proved to be a very tough group.  Twycross through as the best runners up, captain Ben Machine was surprised but happy to get through.

Group C saw only two teams, with Narborough pulling out late in the day.  Stoke Goldington were struggling with flu in the ranks so Huncote's Brian Driver helped in putting out a decent side to challenge Westonians twice.  Westonians proved to be excellent at the short format, and captained well by the young Dan Nice, they beat Goldington twice to win the group, and a place in the semi finals.

The semi final line-ups were drawn out of a hat with the first game between Newbold Verdon and Westonians.  No surprises then as Huncote were paired with the side from Twycross.  Huw Davies, Newbold skipper, won the toss in the first game and elected to field.  In their 5 overs, Westonians scored a decent 61-2, Meman top scoring with 22 and Steve Wagstaff adding 16 not out at the end.  Both hitting huge sixes in their innings.  Wickets for Gransden and Mark Bird.  In reply Newbold lost the impressive Bell early on, and slipped behind the rate.  Davies and Bird tried to keep the score in check, but were both run out.  Davies was baffled when Meman produced a huge throw to end his innings.  Despite a late charge by Wykes, Westonians cruised into the final, Newbold scoring 50-3, with Don Nice picking up a wicket.

In the other semi final, Huncote proved too strong for Twycross, as their bowling set up a decent win against a good side.  Machin won the toss and elected to bat, but wickets for Foley,  and Sommer, and some excellent fielding saw Twycross make 43-4 off their alloted 5 overs.  Collins topped the scoring with 17, which included a huge six.  James Brewin then helped to smash the first over for 20 before Hallum bowled the big hitter for 19, including 3 sixes!  Foley helped guide Huncote home in the last over, for the loss of 3 wickets.  Collins added the wicket of Tim Kirby to his impressive batting.

The final was between the host and Westonians. Pete Kirby once again lost the toss to Westonians' Dan Nice, who elected to field.  This match was to be twice as long as the others, with 10 overs a side, each bowler with 2 overs.  Brewin started with a big 6 off Meman, but the bowler hit back bowling the big hitter in the first over.  Huncote looked to rebuild as Foley joined Peter Kirby, and the partnership grew.  Both players were looking good and the score was going at over 10 an over.  Kirby the next to go, bowled by Raja for 24, a partnership of 55, as Huncote were on 65 with 4 overs left.  Foley passed his 50 before being run out for 55, as Tim Kirby and Carl Sommer continued his good work, leaving the score on 119-3 off 10 overs.

The danger man Meman opened the batting with Pettet, but Sommer accounted for both in the first over, both men bowled.  This put Westonians on the back foot and Steve Wagstaff and Don Nice attempted to rebuild the innings.  This they did, but some decent bowling meant they were always behind the rate.  Wagstaff was run out for an impressive 25, and Dan Nice fell the same way for 5.  Don Nice batted well but it was not to be for the batting side as Raja helped the score to 93-4 off their allotted overs.  A win for Huncote, but an excellent team effort throughout the day from Westonians.  The final MOM went to Duncan Foley for his excellent 50, and the player was awarded the champagne.

The day was brilliant, with the weather helping, the sun shone and the food was superb.  Huncote's resident chef, Mark Scrimshire, provided a top notch spread, in between turning out for the side from Stoke Goldington!!  Thanks also to Brian Driver, Geoff Farmer, Dave Kirby, Polly Crossley, and Liz Turrell in aiding the organisation, as well as the rest of the Huncote team.  Stan Dakin and Brian Driver presented the awards, and they day was rounded off with a cracking barbeque.  Same time next year this reporter thinks.......
